Built upon Bali’s Benoa harbor just 30 minutes from Kuta area, Blackstone Yacht Club offers a unique leisure and dining experience for travelers in transit, sailing enthusiasts, or simply visitors from the city looking for a different vibe to hang out and chill. It is a bar and restaurant next to a harbor where visitors can dine with a scene decorated by the boatside ambience; or even have a private event in a dedicated yacht. The site was originally owned and used for the client’s company purposes and was reconstructed to accommodate their hobby of sailing on their own yacht. It was our first time getting to construct a building on a harbor setting, combined with a yacht club concept that is relatively new for the area that serves the memorable time we had working on this project. It was built right next to the ocean and inside a harbor neighboring numerous private and public business facilities. The site consists of two floors, with the ground floor consisting of the bar, kitchen, indoor and outdoor seating area and swimming pool whereas the second floor is a dedicated vip area and office. With the whole club built sideways to the sea, there is not a single part of the club that has no viewing access to the ocean.
Being our first experience to construct a building close to the ocean, sensibility in responding to the natural condition became a top priority for us. Choosing the right material that can withstand the corrosive nature of sea breeze while still delivering decorative vibes that matches the concept involves numerous new things to learn. The roof uses dried grasses to compliment the seaside concept. We try to make sure the craftsman of these woven grasses delivers a solid output whereas arranging and applying them to the roof also takes attention to detail and mastery to ensure strong installation. Natural stone and sandy finishing all over the building eventually presents a mediterranean vibe for the bar. The swimming pool decorates blackstone’s outdoor seating area that accommodates an alluring experience for visitors to take a dip especially during sunset. Despite the name ‘bar’, we experimented with the lighting system that is fully controllable to set the mood and ambience. It becomes a multifunction leisurely venue for family gathering in the restaurant and cafe mode or nightlife and event spot in the bar and club mode; fully customizable solely from the lighting ambience setting. These are all complimented with the traffic scenery of boats setting sail and harboring throughout the day.
The unique seaside site does come with a twist. In times of storm, we had to make prevention measures from severe damage on the construction process. Several material and decoration loss happened during the storm, however we successfully managed to keep the disturbance low especially towards the structure. Being located on a port far from the mainroad, access for material shipment was also rather challenging. Our team had to put extra attention to the traffic and access permit. We learned, did trial and errors, and grinded to learn sensibility in surrounding conditions in a construction process especially in material selection. The versatile concept of the bar also exercised our senses in creating spatial experience, in the end we successfully delivered a one of a kind experience and one of the first yacht clubs in the Bali area.
It was our first experience to execute a project located on a shoreline for the similar fact that this is one of the first yacht clubs in the area. It is a prideful achievement to gain all the lesson from such a unique disposition of the project
